As Suicide Prevention Month draws to a close, we also mark the end of the three-year national theme, Change the Narrative.

September saw a range of initiatives and activities focused on raising awareness, encouraging conversations and strengthening community action around suicide prevention, including:

  • The launch of the Suicide Prevention Community Toolkit, developed by the National Suicide Prevention Office to help communities start conversations about suicide prevention and take meaningful action.
  • The alignment of North Queensland Primary Health Network’s suicide prevention plans and local actions with the National Suicide Prevention Outcomes.
  • Strong community support for R U OK? Day, with events held across the region encouraging people to not only ask “Are you OK?”, but also listen, encourage action and check in.

There is always more happening across our communities. To mark the final day of Suicide Prevention Month, North Mackay Rotary painted Mackay’s first publicly accessible Blue Tree. It is the fifth registered Blue Tree in the Mackay region, joining others across Mackay, Isaac and the Whitsundays.

Why is the tree blue?

It’s a simple question that can spark a conversation, much like asking someone, “Are you OK?”. Sometimes a single question can open the door to connection, support and understanding. These are the conversations that help change the narrative around mental health and suicide prevention.

Talking about mental health shouldn’t be feared. Through open and honest conversations, we can break down stigma, raise awareness and create communities where people feel supported to seek help when they need it.

Blue Tree Project

Blue Tree Project is a mental health charity that began in 2019 after the tragic loss of Jayden Whyte, a much-loved son, brother and friend to suicide in 2018. Blue Tree Project began as a grassroots initiative in regional Western Australia which has grown into a widely recognised and impactful global charity.

While we celebrate the achievements of September, we also look ahead to Mental Health Month in October and the continued work taking place across our region to support wellbeing and strengthen suicide prevention efforts.

Suicide is preventable, and we all have a part to play.
